Aston University is offering a three year PhD studentship to develop an automated time tabling software system for the University. The position is available to start in September/October 2015 subject to negotiation. This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £13,863 for the 2015/16 academic year. Eligibility: The successful applicant should have a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics based subject, involving Computing and preferably Mathematics. Since a large part of the project will involve interaction with other software systems and coding, knowledge/experience of programming in an appropriate language (C++, C#, or Java preferred), and how to write well-engineered code are essential to this role. It would also be advantageous to have experience in the presentation of complex analyses to untrained users, software version control systems, knowledge of object-oriented design and implementation, along with an understanding of the full software development and product lifecycle. An understanding of algorithm design (although the core algorithm will be provided), and good inter-personal skills to work within Aston University and liaise with academics, students and administrative staff, would be highly desirable.

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a three year PhD studentship, to be undertaken within the Mathematics & Computer Science Research Groups at Aston University. The studentship is offered specifically to develop an automated time tabling software system for Aston University, and offers a fantastic opportunity to obtain a PhD while developing a substantial software system with the support of academic mentors with experience in both optimisation algorithms and robust software design.

Duration of award(s): Studentship is awarded for a period of 3 years. The position is available to start in September/October 2015 subject to negotiation.
What does it cover? This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of £13,863 for the 2015/16 academic year. Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and ‘Overseas’ tuition fees; currently this is £11,448 in the 2015/16 academic year. As part of the application you will be required to confirm that you have applied for, or, secured this additional funding.
